Happy Reformation Day!

  • Listening: Martin Luther: Hymns, Ballads, Chants, Truth
When I was a kid, favorite days were easy: Christmas, my birthday, anything involving good food. And really, for most of my adult life that has been true, too.

But there's something about being part of a good confessional, liturgical Lutheran church....
Now, my favorite days are often defined by what church is going to be like and what hymns we are going to get to sing. For that reason, Reformation Day is right up there!  Not only did we get to sing A Mighty Fortress and We All Believe in One True God (with the interesting tune) in church this morning, but we also got to sing them again this evening at Reformation Vespers, where we also enjoyed the Bach Collegium.

I have been a Lutheran more whole life and also attended a large Lutheran elementary school, but there are so many wonderful hymns that I didn't learn until the past few years. Among them are two more favorites that we sang this morning: Salvation Unto Us Has Come and Isaiah Mighty Seer.

And this week still has the All Saint's hymns to come!

And if you haven't yet had your fill of Reformation, here's a bit of reading for you.

I, too, love the Reformation hymns, but what I really look forward to all year is All Saints -- the whole service -- but especially the hymns.

As long as we get to sing the *right* hymns.o:)

(And I will never like singing For All the Saints as well from LW.)

I concur. I'll have to talk to the kantor - he just loves it when I make suggestions ;-) I like most things from TLH better than LW, although LW does have some hymns which I like that aren't in TLH.
