Why is it that we understand that monopolies are ineffective except when it comes to education?

I enjoyed reading the article, and would present that the lack of solid consistent values are more the driving issue in schools than the terrible teachers. With a society that allows children to be less and less responsible and parents who prefer to let their children be politically right instead of a clear teaching of right and wrong, the schools will continue to be a holding tank for children during the day so that children can do as they please in the evening and their loving parents watch in amazement. the first Willie wonka movie with Gene Wilder was a great example of what children can become without clear boundaries that teach caring and respect for all.

I don't think that the problem is terrible teachers at all. I think that most teachers are good to excellent. The problem is with the education bureaucracy and the lack of any real competition for the government schools.

I do, however, think that it would be better for teaching as a profession to lose the union mentality and let bad teachers get what incompetent people get in the real world.

I agree with you, Jane. It's not bad teachers and it's not bad kids. It's a HORRIBLE system. Choice is really important. Being able to choose a school that works well for your child, fits in with your family's unique schedule, and works hard to please the parents of the students that attend there should be more than a nice American fairy tale.
